12 KongresasThe 12th World Lithuanian Youth Congress (PLJK), hosted by the World Lithuanian Youth Organization (PLJS), starts at the end of this month. PLJS helps Jaunimo Sąjungos around the world with their various activities. The only qualification for membership in PLJS is that you be a self-identified Lithuanian between the ages of 16 and 35.

PLJS relies on the kongresas to set its agenda and elect its valdyba for the next 3–4 years (until the next kongresas). So participating is a good chance to help direct the largest Lithuanian youth organization in the world. Voting members of the kongresas, atstovai, are chosen by their respective nations' LJSes. There are still some spots available for members of the US delegation. If you are interested in participating in the kongresas as a voting member, contact Arūnas Karalis, the JAVLJS president at akaralis1 <at> hotmail <dot> com. US Atstovai participate in studijų dienos (June 26–June 30) in Kretinga and receive a stipend from JAVLJS to help with travel costs.

Besides being a space for serious discussion about PLJS's agenda for the next couple years, kongresas is also a great time to see new places and—much more importantly—meet smart, new people from 18 different nations who already share with you one of the most important aspects of your identity, your lietuvybė. Few lithchat readers have been to Kretinga, or have camped out north of Montréal (two main parts of the kongresas program)—but fewer still have sat around a table with young Lithuanians from four different continents at once, laughing and chatting. It's a very valuable experience, one that I encourage all to take advantage of.

Luckily, even if you can't take off two weeks for both studijų dienos and stovykla, you can still participate in the weekend activities. Kongresas opens with events in Toronto the weekend of June 24. Then there are events in Hamilton the weekend of July 1. Kongresas closes the following weekend, July 8, in Montréal. Each weekend has an inexpensive affair for youths on Friday night and a more formal banquet on Saturday night. The PLJK Ruošos Komitetas put together this pdf to whet your appetite.

It's not too late to become and atstovas, and it most certainly is not too late to start planning for attending events à la carte. Kongresas only comes to North America once a decade (at best), so don't miss out!
