This is such a trifle, but it made Stasys laugh out loud when I mentioned it to him today. As a kid, Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas confused the hell out of me, since they both had names that began with "St" and, additionally, one had two first names. Actually, maybe "Girėnas" is also a first name. Who can tell in the crazy world that was turn-of-the-century Lithuania. So if I'm confused, then maybe it's not nice to make fun of others who get confused.

Anyway, there is a football stadium in Kaunas named after them, called anything from "Stepono Dariaus ir Stasio Girėno stadionas" to "S. Dariaus ir S. Girėno Stadium" to just, on the UEFA page, "S. Darius & S. Girenas." While reading about the Lithuania-Scotland match from last week, though, I noticed that one website had expanded "S. Darius & S. Girenas" to "San Darius and San Girenas." This is, apparently, a not entirely rare mistake, though the site I was looking at was, in fact, in English.

I know that Darius and Girėnas are national heroes, but canonization seems to be a bit of a stretch. (I won't make the two hilarious but crass jokes I just set up here, because, well, this isn't that kind of site.)
