![]() Victorious Lithuanians rush the court. fiba.com In any case, after losing to Turkey and Greece in two close games, a short-staffed Lithuanian team cleaned up in the next three matches (against Qatar, Australia, and Brazil), to earn a berth in the elimination round (though the top four of six teams per group do advance...). By finishing third in their group, Lithuania managed to avoid a first-round draw against the US, and, in fact, they would only see the US in the final on 3 September. So I was kind of excited to start watching the elimination round games, and, according to my TV listings, ESPN2 would be showing, at 11pm CDT: "FIBA World Championship, Elimination Game: Teams TBA" Episode #ELIM. From Saitama, Japan.This was coinciding very neatly with the Round of 16 match between Italy and Lithuania. Come 11, we turn on ESPN2, and the World-Wide Leader has decided to preëmpt a live, international elimination event in a sport that was invented in the US with reruns of a reality show (The Contender). I was a little miffed. Luckily, we were able to watch Lithuania's narrow win over Italy because of what are, now, three backup plans (thanks to Povilas for compiling the list like this):
