"ESPN is the World-Wide Leader of My Pants," I remarked last night. The FIBA World Basketball Championships are going on in Japan right now (though from the coverage on ESPN, you'd think Team USA is on the Pacific Rim playing itself). It's been intensely difficult to follow the progress of teams not named "Dream Team n" because of the usual overbearing nationalism of the US media in international sports events, but I'm certain that the fact that the matches take place in Japan (and, hence, at awkward-ass times in the US) has also made things tricky.

In any case, after losing to Turkey and Greece in two close games, a short-staffed Lithuanian team cleaned up in the next three matches (against Qatar, Australia, and Brazil), to earn a berth in the elimination round (though the top four of six teams per group do advance...). By finishing third in their group, Lithuania managed to avoid a first-round draw against the US, and, in fact, they would only see the US in the final on 3 September. So I was kind of excited to start watching the elimination round games, and, according to my TV listings, ESPN2 would be showing, at 11pm CDT:
"FIBA World Championship, Elimination Game: Teams TBA" Episode #ELIM. From Saitama, Japan.
This was coinciding very neatly with the Round of 16 match between Italy and Lithuania. Come 11, we turn on ESPN2, and the World-Wide Leader has decided to preëmpt a live, international elimination event in a sport that was invented in the US with reruns of a reality show (The Contender). I was a little miffed.

Luckily, we were able to watch Lithuania's narrow win over Italy because of what are, now, three backup plans (thanks to Povilas for compiling the list like this):
  1. TVUPlayer. This streaming client, which uses bittorrent technology, made it possible for me to watch nearly every World Cup match that was on while I was at work this summer. If you turn it to CCTV-5, you can watch the FIBA World Championships. The commentary will be in Mandarin Chinese, but I consider that a bonus. Downloadable everywhere. (Windows only)
  1. MediaZone. This website is apparently carrying the matches live with FIBA's ok. You have to register for it. I don't know if there's any more to it, as, well, TVUPlayer takes care of everything for me.
  1. TVCentras. This is, apparently, a for-pay service (£2.99 for a single Lithuania match). Again, because of TVUPlayer, I haven't checked it out, but it could have Lithuanian commentary on the matches. If you buy a match, you can keep it and download it, however, which means there might be a rush should Lithuania start having truly stellar matches.
  1. (There is a fourth option: waiting 50+ hours and watching the match on NBATV.)
Lithuania plays Spain at 5:30am (CDT) on 29 August in the Quarterfinals.
