ImageThese are the Faroe Islands. They are more or less midway between Iceland and Scotland. Their population is smaller than that of Oak Park, IL. In fact, Alex Bellos's great book about Brazilian soccer, Futebol, opens with a chapter about men who leave the favelas of Rio to play in the Faroese league. Remote doesn't even begin to describe these islands. Despite the tiny size and remoteness, the Faroe Islands field a team in UEFA. It is the weakest team in UEFA saving Luxembourg and San Marino. According to FIFA, it is the 179th team in the world.

So far, in Euro 2008 qualifying, The Faroese have been annihilated first by Georgia (93d in the world), 6–0, and then by Scotland (34th), to the same tune. Today they hosted Lithuania (67th). And they carried a 0–0 tie into the 89th minute! It took the rinktinė 89 minutes to score and come away with the three points that should be de rigueur in travelling to those northerly isles.

Again, Lithuania has no chance to advance to Euro 2008—they would need to rely on a collapse from at least two more teams in Group B, and this is assuming that Italy continues to stink. But, dammit, when you are playing the minnows of minnows, you're supposed to boost your goal differential!
